Nikon d90 vs Nikon d5200?

First time camera buyer (besides my standard coolpix digital cameras). I want to know which camera would be a smarter buy. I will be traveling out of the country soon and want a camera that can capture some amazing views, but I also want a camera that can take beautiful pictures of people up close as well. Anyone who has experience with both cameras? Which did you prefer?

How to record from an external camera connected through a simple USB cord?

I have an old Nikon coolpix camer L18 and i wanted to use it instead of my webcam. How would i go about making it a capture device on my computer? The reason why i ask this is I want everything that goes on on that camera to be right on my laptop, and I want to be able to record from my laptop and edit on my laptop as well therefore no need to reach over and hit the record button, possibly screwing up the angle. On top of this i want to be able to see what it is recording. The screen faces away from me so I have no clue. Any tiny hint as to what to do will help. The sooner you answer the more likely I'll favor yours over another, but only if you information is more clear and concise than your competitors.
