Help with the Nikon Coolpix S2600?

Hi, I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix S2600, I charged it up, and it worked great, a nice little camera for a decent price. However, the battery died, and it came up with the error message 'battery exhausted' but it won't stay on long enough to charge? What should I do? I'm thinking of buying a spare battery and separate charging unit. Would this work?
