Nikon D5100 or Canon EOS 600D?

I currently own the Nikon P500 but want to move to a DSLR. Most of my photography takes place during the day and is landscape. I'd also like to begin photographing people as well. I want a good clear image with good focus and depth. Also, would I be able to photograph things at night such as the stars and moon? I've researched a lot and these two cameras is what I have narrowed my choices down to. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

First DSLR camera - really need some help?

I have always been into photography and i have produced some photographs that i am very proud of, however, it was all done on my Nikon Coolpix L120 bridge camera. I wanted to get a DSLR camera, so bought one off a friend. It is a Nikon D50 and it came with a lens that says 'AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm' which i have on the camera now and it also came with a lens that says 'Jessop 77mm'. Now this DSLR is all new to me, and i only have basic knowledge on ISO and the basics of the DSLR.

Please can someone help me just to explain what the difference is when taking photos. Every photo i take seems to go blurry and i try to focus it.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong and because I'm new please explain it like you were explaining it to a five year old.

Oh, one thing that i can do on the camera is slow down the shutter speed and create patterns with lights which turn out to be successful. But anything beyond this (like normal photos of things, particularity animals) would be a great thing to get help on.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Added (1). I have read the manual already just to get to grips with the basics but i don't understand the concept of the camera, what things should i use it for, what occasions etc.

Why is a DSLR camera so different and complicated than a bridge camera?

Thanks for all the help so far off everyone.
