Why does my Nikon Coolpix P50 keep giving me a Lens error message when I turn it on?

I have had so many problems with this camera! It takes great photos, but I seem to always have little glitches like this. Now, the lens is extended, and won't retract when I turn it off. Every time I turn it on, it acts normal for a second, then flashes the "lens error" screen. Anyone know more about these cameras?

And yes, I keep it in a case always, and the lens looks clean. It is is great condition, and I only bought it about six months ago.
