Broken Battery Compartment on Nikon Coolpix L24?

I received a the Nikon Coolpix L24 as a gift last Christmas and recently, the small clip that held the battery compartment closed, snapped off.Is there anyway to repair this? Or is the camera completely done for? I know that I could simply tape the compartment closed, but I feel as though that wouldn't be entirely wise. I doubt it would be hard to fix, but I could be wrong. Could someone recommend any ideas or suggestions?

Note: The camera does not have a warranty on it, therefore the company isn't liable for what happened to the camera.
Added (1). It's not the compartment itself, I'm sorry for my inaccurate explanation.It's a small clip that held the compartment shut on the inside when you slide the door back into place. The door itself is king of spring loaded.

IPhoto pictures disappearing after I edit them?

I double click on a picture to edit it, then edit it, then click done and press ESC to see all my photos. When I double click on the photo I edited to bring it to a bigger screen like it was before, the picture appears for a second then goes black. And If I try to move the picture to the computer desktop, the file is empty. How can I stop this from happening? I hate losing my pictures. Can it be reversed?
I have iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2, and my camera is a Nikon Coolpix L22

Whats the best DSLR camera for a total beginner?

I was wondering what the best DSLR camera for a total newbie would be? The only camera I've ever had was a nikon coolpix L19, which is great, but Im thinking I'd like to get something a little more professional. I need something VERY user friendly. Ive never really worked with one before, but Im willing to try and learn. Also, I think it would be helpful if you would write your answers like your writing them to an 8 year old. Thanks!

I don't know what to get on Black Friday for an early birthday gift! I want either a Nikon camera or a laptop. I already own both a laptop and a camera. I currently own a Olympus Stylus 7010, an iPod Touch, and a desktop computer. The camera I want is the Nikon Coolpix P510 or the the laptop I want is the HP Pavillion 2000. I can only choose one but I want both! I wanted a new camera but I've always wanted a laptop. On black Friday the camera is on sale at Best Buy for $299.99 and the laptop is on sale at Walmart for $279.99. Why do you suggest me getting and why?
